Supplier Intelligence

What is supplier intelligence?

Supplier intelligence is the practice, and the software category, of finding, vetting, analysing, enriching and monitoring suppliers using data from many external sources rather than a single registered network. It answers a different question from a supplier database. A database tells you who is on the list. Supplier intelligence tells you who exists, what they can do, whether you can trust them, and what has changed since you last looked.

How does it differ from supplier discovery?

Supplier discovery is the first step: identifying new supply sources. Gartner’s Hype Cycle for Procurement and Sourcing Solutions, 2025, published 30 June 2025, defines supplier discovery solutions as tools that “assist organizations in identifying, assessing and incorporating new supply sources for goods and services within their procurement processes,” places the innovation profile At the Peak, and rates it Benefit High with market penetration of 1% to 5% of target audience. Supplier intelligence extends discovery across the supplier lifecycle: vetting against certifications, financial health, ESG and sanctions, enriching records you already hold, and monitoring for change after the award.

How does it differ from a source-to-pay suite?

Gartner’s definition of a source-to-pay suite lists e-sourcing, spend analytics, contract life cycle management, supplier information, risk and performance management, and procure-to-pay as the base modules. That list does not include supplier discovery. In the same 2025 report, the only source-to-pay suite vendors Gartner names as sample vendors under supplier discovery are Coupa and SAP. Gartner’s stated obstacle for the discovery category is “A unified global supplier database does not exist. The market is fragmented, with variations in the number, type of suppliers and data enrichment available.”

Why does independence matter?

Gartner recommends that procurement teams “Investigate AI and graph technology solutions to establish an autonomous supplier discovery process that operates independently from other systems.” Ownership of the data layer is also consolidating. Coupa, a source-to-pay suite vendor, announced the acquisition of the supplier discovery vendor Scoutbee on 6 October 2025. Supplier.io announced the acquisition of TealBook on 2 April 2026; Supplier.io is a supplier intelligence vendor, not a procurement suite. Both companies were among the ten sample vendors Gartner listed for supplier discovery in that June 2025 report. Speya’s assessment is that when a suite owns the intelligence, the suite’s own network, roadmap and pricing shape it. Three questions a buyer can ask any vendor make the difference concrete:

  • Who owns the vendor, and is the product bundled into a suite or ERP?

  • Can suppliers pay to be listed, ranked or featured?

  • What can you export, and does the data move with you if you change suites?

Speya answers them as follows. Speya is built and operated by Findmyfactory AB in Stockholm and is not owned by or bundled into any procurement suite or ERP vendor. Suppliers cannot pay Speya to be listed or ranked. Speya connects to any suite through its API and its records export as spreadsheets.

What does a team without it pay?

McKinsey, in “With artificial intelligence, find new suppliers in days, not months,” reports that it takes “about three months to complete” a single supplier search, with “more than 40 hours of work,” while a sourcing professional is able to consider “only a few dozen suppliers from a total population of thousands.” Speya searches millions of supplier profiles across 250+ data sources in parallel and returns an AI-vetted, tiered shortlist in minutes, with sources beside every name.

The five jobs of supplier intelligence

  • Discover: find capable suppliers for a need, inside and outside your network.

  • Vet: check certifications, financial health, ESG evidence and sanctions, with sources.

  • Analyse: compare candidates on capability, capacity, risk and fit.

  • Enrich: refresh the supplier records you already hold against live sources.

  • Monitor: watch for changes in status, certifications and risk after the award.
